Would you go to a doctor with a problem and not asked him/her what caused it ? You would want to know why it happened wouldn’t you ? Procrastination is the same. When you know what causes it your going to have a better chance of eliminating procrastination from your life.
I’m going to tell you a little bit about the first reason we procrastinate.
Having the wrong goals is the first reason. While I cover this at length in my recording at www.beatprocrastination.com.au for now I reveal a number of examples of wrong goals, this is one of the first I want to share with you.
We set up ourselves for failure by not choosing the right goal for us in the first place. Now, I’m counting a couple of different things here. First, I’m talking about the goal that is not consistent with your core values and your core beliefs, right. If you don’t have a belief you can achieve that goal, you won’t achieve it. When you have that kind of structure, you’ll have a hard time achieving it, because you’ll tend to procrastinate. If you’re not capable of achieving a goal, you’ll have a hard time achieving it, because you’ll tend to procrastinate.
Now, I’m also talking about the goal that is not your goal – in other words, it’s the goal that you set because it’s trendy, it’s popular, you do it to satisfy the masses or other people – you’ll tend to procrastinate there as well. You take a university student that does a degree in a particular field they don’t particularly like, but they do it just to satisfy their parents. When they’re in that sort of situation, they’re kicking and dragging their feet as they go.
So, set the goals that are consistent with who you are. That’s the first thing.
Secondly, and most importantly, too many people set goals that are simply unrealistic. Too big, they want it too soon, and they wonder why they doesn’t have any results in their life. Now, let me ask you, what happens to a person that is consistently setting big goals that are outside of their scope, outside of their belief system, and they keep coming short of them? What kind of pattern does it set up in their mind? That’s right, that sort of person starts to say, “Why do I bother with this goal setting stuff – I don’t ever achieve anything.” Look, one of the most powerful, most powerful things I can leave you here , is to set goals that are realistic.
Some people want to shoot for the moon, and they want it to happen tomorrow! Don’t do that. Set realistic goals! You can get there by just setting the next level up goal, the next activity goal, and then just have the next one you want, and then just have a staggered approach.
Set yourself a goal that is realistic, something you can see that isn’t too far and isn’t overpowering, not too far away, but at the same time, giving you a bit of a stretch, get you out of your comfort zone. And once you’ve done that, and you’ve built your belief, you’ve built your power, then you set yourself another realistic goal, with another stretch factor. And once you’ve done that, another one. So it’s like a series of stepping stones, still getting into you in the same direction, but having a staggered approach. But let’s not be disillusioned.
Also, the wrong goal is something that’s too low. It doesn’t stimulate you, drive you, because you’ve done it before or you can do it or it’s simple. It doesn’t give you that drive, to give you that ‘take action step’, to beat procrastination and help you as well.
So have the right goals. There’s a right set of goals for everybody , designed to give you action, rather than impede you in performance. So choose wisely.
