Decluttering Paperwork

8 September 2011

I am slowly decluttering my house….?

but I have three areas left to do:

the hall (covered in paperwork and shoes)
the bedroom (floor full of clothes and goodness knows what else my partner dumps on the floor)
the box room/laundry room (also full of clothes and whatever my partner dumps in there)

Where do I start and how?! Living room, kitchen and bathroom were easy but all these masses of clothes will take weeks to wash and I don’t know how to go about sorting it!

Thanks!

I know how overwhelmed you must feel, but once you get started and make some progress you will not feel this way.

Everyone has given you very good answers, I suggest that you start on your bedroom. The reason is that when it is done and you still have other rooms to do, this gives you a place to retreat to at the end of a difficult day. When you wake up in the morning it looks so good that you will want the rest of your house to look this way as well. This alone makes you more determined to finish your task.

The first thing that you should do it open up the curtains and windows. Let the sun shine in…this serves two purposes…it make you feel better and you can see better. Now turn on some lively music and play it loud. Sing along with it, this too energizes you.

Go get about 4 or 5 large garbage sacks.

Start with the junk and garbage…old papers, empty containers, throw this stuff away.

In the second sack, pick up any dirty laundry…put it in the sack to be sorted later. Put that sack in the laundry room.

Now gather everything else that is laying around. Just put it in the sack for now.

Get yourself some dust rags, furniture polish and a vacuum…start from top to bottom. Dust clean and polish.

Change the sheets on your bed and make your bed.

Now go to the sack with all of your stuff in it…Put the books and shoes away.

A place for everything and everything in its place.

If it doesn’t have a place it is clutter. It is very difficult to have a clean house if it is full of clutter. Now is the time to get rid of the clutter.

As you are putting your things away, wipe the things off with a damp cloth…so you are putting away clean things. You may need to get some storage containers, they have plastic ones at Target and Walmart for about $3 a piece.

Now sort the laundry…keep only the things that are in good condition, fit and that you love. Get rid of the donate the rest. If the mountain of clothes is too large, take them to the laundromat. You will have it all done in a few hours with more machines.

After your house is clean, just get into the habit of putting everything that you use away, and life will get better. It is more fun to have a clean home. You probably waste a lot of time just looking for misplaced items. This will eliminate that stress…At the end of the day after you have a clean and orderly home, before you go to bed…take a walk through you house and if there is something out of place, put it away. It only takes seconds and prevents this chaos from happening again. Good Luck
