Professional Organizations in Trouble Hinders Professionals and the Economy

Many professional workers were laid off at the peak of the recession and allowed their memberships in professional organizations to lapse. Those that remain employed are either working long hours to keep their jobs and therefore not attending organization events, or have allowed their memberships to lapse altogether as a way to save more money. As professional organizations suffer, so do the professionals they serve.

One of the main reasons that members of professional organizations cite for joining is professional development. As membership numbers (and income) decline, organizations are less able to provide development opportunities to members. The programs that are provided have low attendance rates lately. The problem is that if professionals do not participate in development, their knowledge base becomes static. In the long term, static knowledge bases mean static careers. This is not only bad for individuals, but also for their employers. Businesses that do not have employees with dynamic skill sets cannot be dynamic. As the new economy emerges, businesses and employees must be adaptable. Professional development is the key to building stronger professionals, stronger businesses, and a stronger economy.

But with reduced budgets and attendance rates, costly seminars are simply not a viable option for many professional organizations. Many professional organizations are turning to e-learning programs to replace lunch time presentations. Organizations offer access to e-learning courses through custom LMSs. The organization chooses which programs to offer based on the interest of the membership, and either charges members a small additional fee for use, or includes LMS access as part of the membership package.

Including an e-learning program in the membership package has a high RIO. Members are more likely to renew or return to the organization when given 24 hour a day access to professional development tools that they can utilize at their convenience from work or the comfort of their homes. Offering e-learning professional development does not have to be costly for the organization.

In fact, it can be a revenue stream. Management Training Systems has partnered with SilkWeb Consulting to offer revenue-sharing packages to organizations. With the revenue-sharing program, organizations provide members with access to e-learning courses, and receive revenue from each purchase. The courses are inexpensive and affordable for individuals, and members appreciate the ease of access provided by the organization.

Offering organization members access to e-learning programs through a revenue-sharing program is easy and there is little paperwork (and overhead associated with paperwork), for the organization. It strengthens the organization by providing an additional revenue stream. It strengthens members by offering convenient professional development opportunities that provide the employee with dynamic skills. It strengthens employers by providing them with professionals who have dynamic skill sets. All this adds up to a stronger economy, where professional organizations, employees, and businesses can thrive.
